In this age of computers and big-screen TVs, it can be tough to get your family up and moving, but with obesity at an all-time high, family fitness is more important than ever. The good news is that with just a little bit of planning, involving your family is easy. Plus, it really is a win-win thing: you and your spouse get fit, the kids get exercise, and the whole family gets to spend time together.
Here are eight ideas for fun family activities and exercises:
Get outside.
Sometimes you can get the whole family moving if you just open the door and move everyone into the yard. Pick up an inexpensive ball and play catch or a game of touch football. Dust off the badminton racquets and set up the net. Toss a Frisbee® and get the family pup involved.
Take a walk.
You can explore your neighborhood and see it all through your kids’ eyes, or you can head to the woods and hike. Sign everyone up for a charity walk, then set up a regular training session, so you’re all ready for the event. Your children will experience the satisfaction that comes from supporting a good cause, while they get in shape.
Make a day of it.
Go hiking in nearby woods. Find a bike trail and take a long ride. If you’re near a river, try rafting or tubing. You can also use the GPS unit in your car or on your phone for a game of geocaching—a fun, modern-day treasure hunt. In this game, you go online to find out where the “treasure” boxes are hidden in your area, and then you go in search of them, using clues and GPS coordinates. There are now more than a million geocaches hidden in cities, neighborhoods and even oceans, around the U.S. and the world.
Back to the future.
If you’ve got smaller kids and a driveway, you can create a hopscotch pattern. Get out the hula-hoops. Play hide-n-seek, kick-the-can or red rover. Set up a scavenger hunt and invite the neighbors to play. Bowling is making a big comeback and can be exercise that won’t break the bank.
Plant a garden.
There’s nothing like the satisfaction you get from planting vegetables or flowers then seeing them grow. Let the kids plant some of their favorite veggies and help them till, weed, and harvest. It’s wonderful exercise, and your children will be more excited about fresh produce if they’ve watched it grow.
Pick your own.
No room for a garden? No problem! Head out into the country, to one of the pick-your-own farms in your area. Go out into the fields with the children and fill your baskets with local apples, berries or vegetables.
Be seasonal.
When it’s warm outside, take out the bikes and helmets. If there’s nowhere to bike in your area, load the bikes onto the car and find one of the bike trails in your area; most places have them now. Play a game of putt-putt. In the winter, go ice skating, if you live in a cold part of the country.
Dance.
Even if it’s rainy or snowing outside, your family can still exercise. Turn up the music and get everyone up and dancing. Have fun; be a little crazy. Let the kids show you their favorite dance moves, then you can show them the dances you did when you were their ages—back in the “old” days!
