Robin Rocks!
Michigan mom loses 30 lbs.* on Nutrisystem Success
Like many women, I didn’t start struggling with my weight until after I had children. After I had kids, I started cooking for them and cleaning up and eating a little bit of what was left over (and I did a lot of cooking and a lot of eating!). Plus, I was (and still am) busy, always on the go. When I was in my mid-30s, I started to put on pounds and had bad eating habits, so it just kept creeping on.

It wasn’t for lack of trying. I understood so much about healthy living, dieting, calorie counting, points counting, and exercising; and I tried almost every diet out there. Nothing seemed to really work for me.

By age 44, I had resigned myself to just accepting the fact that I was overweight. I told myself that most people my age looked like me; I looked better than some, worse than others, move on, accept it—there is nothing I could do about it short of starving myself (and that only works for a short time). At that point, I lacked self-esteem, confidence, and even the ability to go out and try to do things. I had no energy to go out and even give it a shot.

Putting herself on the scrap heap

Well, I’m also a scrapbooker and I noticed that I didn’t have any pictures of me in my family albums. I always looked at them and said, “Wow, my kids and my husband had a wonderful vacation.” But I wasn’t in any of the pictures; I was the family photographer. When I did actually see pictures of myself, I would crop them: I would crop out my head; I would crop out the bad parts. I would have pictures where I would cut out myself and I’d post a picture of my family without me because I didn’t really want to be in my albums looking that way. And it was all a little sad to see. I wanted to be part of my kids’ life—as well as my own life.

After seeing those photos I was clearly unhappy. One evening when I was feeling especially depressed and discouraged, my husband Dave asked if I wanted to try Nutrisystem, which he’d seen advertised on TV. At first I wasn't sure that I wanted to go that route. I felt that ordering would prove I couldn't control myself. I was very skeptical, too. I didn’t want to do another trendy fad diet—I wanted to be healthy. I also thought maybe it was a scam and wondered what would happen after I stopped "eating their food." But I decided I would try it for one month and, if it was a scam, lesson learned. Because I was sure that it was time for me to take an active role in my own life and do what I needed to do to get healthy again.

Family meals and hunger-free

Well, that was the best diet decision I have ever made! When I first started, I couldn’t believe it was a diet that I was doing. I was very pleased because of the foods I could eat—and that they were so good. For example, the first time I tried the pizza, I was so surprised that it was that tasty. I didn’t feel like I was “missing out”—which also allowed me to eat the same meals as my family. So when my family ordered a carry-out pizza, I ate my Nutrisystem® pizza—and it was fabulous. I also never felt deprived; I actually felt very full. I felt like I should be hungrier than I was. But I was eating every two hours, so I never felt hungry.

As a result, I noticed weight loss within a week: I lost two-and-a-half pounds that first week. The second week I lost another two- and-a-half.* I could not believe it was coming off so easily. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything extra, and I was losing weight. I lost 30 pounds* total and I am ecstatic about my results.

An eating education

Why did it work for me? Like I said, in the past I tended to do what a lot of other women do: try fad diets that make you skip meals or count calories, which doesn’t leave you in control of what you’re doing. I was basically trying to skip meals and do a quick fix. And Nutrisystem is about a healthy lifestyle. There was no skipping meals. There was no counting calories. It wasn’t complicated: It was eat, open up the package, warm it up and eat whatever I chose to eat for the day. If I were in a hurry, I could grab a lunch bar. I just loved the control and the convenience of Nutrisystem.
And with Nutrisystem, I started eating five times a day. I was eating on a regular schedule, and in a healthy way. So I no longer had that desire to go out on Thursday night or Friday night to a restaurant and eat way more than I should because I was eating healthy and being satisfied throughout the week.

Also, the Nutrisystem® program taught me proper portions. I had always struggled with portion control; for me, it was very easy to go back to a second helping. But Nutrisystem had the portions all set out and it was all structured: I was eating every couple hours, which was the best thing for me.

Running with it

So Nutrisystem taught me a lot about healthy eating, but that’s not the only good habit I now have—I exercise a lot, too. I’d never had the energy or the confidence or the desire to go out and run, but now I can run. I was a power walker, not a runner; and now I’m running 3-5 miles a week, which is a big deal for me. I go out in my little running outfit and I go out and run with Dave—that’s quite an accomplishment for me, and that’s something I’m very proud of. I also run with girlfriends; we have a running group. And I just know that when we go out, I can do it and I’m not going to get a half a mile down the road and have to stop. I even finished my first 5K!

I feel better than I have in years! When I get up in the morning, I just feel energized. I look in the mirror, and I have confidence in myself and self-esteem, probably for the first time in my life. See, I’ve been thin before in my life, but I think this is the first time that I felt good. I feel very comfortable in my own skin, and for the first time in years, I really feel happy.

I really wish I had started Nutrisystem 10 years ago, when my kids were younger and I first started getting overweight and wanted to lose the baby weight. I wish I would have just done that right away. I would have saved so much money and so much time, and I would have just been much happier all those years.

As it is, I can now go out and enjoy myself and have fun, whereas before I might sit at home. Now I can teach a healthy diet to my teenage children and feel like I’m not being a hypocrite. I’m finally at a place in my life where I’m happy and I’m content, thanks to Nutrisystem.
