Making the Grade
College student Courtney loses 39 lbs.*
I still remember how fearful my mom and I were.

My mom was afraid that I may have diabetes since a doctor had previously told me that I was pre-diabetic because of my weight. And I was afraid to go to a doctor at all for fear that she was right. I thought I’d tried everything under the sun to try and lose weight or even just maintain weight instead of gaining each time I stepped on the scale.

The problem is, I’d had problems with weight since I was ten years old. I was always the fat girl in the class. In fact, a boy once asked our teacher in gym class if I could be excused from the jumping jacks because he was concerned the floor may break—and the teacher even laughed!

Sister act

Despite these weight challenges, I made it through high school and went to college at North Carolina-Wilmington. After I started college, I joined a sorority (the Zeta Chi chapter of Alpha Xi Delta) at one of my points of lower weight fluctuation and couldn’t be happier! So even as the weight continued to creep upward, my sisters always accepted me and treated me exactly the same.

However, despite their unconditional support, I couldn’t help but feel that I stood out in a bad way for them. That I was just the fat girl in the group. Finally, in the week after my twenty-first birthday, I saw a picture of myself out celebrating my birthday with friends. I couldn’t believe the girl in the picture was me! When friends asked me to post pictures from the night, I actually lied and said I had lost them all because I was so embarrassed. That night, I decided enough was enough. As a Psychology major, I like to do research, so I studied the weight loss options out there and decided to try Nutrisystem.

Enjoying face time

Within months, I could easily say it was the best decision I’d ever made! I continued to go strong with my weight loss and, amazingly, I even got invited to a Nutrisystem photo shoot over the summer—and by that time I’d lost 39 lbs.!* That got me in the healthy range for my height (5’10”) and, more important, I am no longer at risk for diabetes. Needless to say, my mom and I both certainly sleep a little easier at night!

I soon went out to the sorority functions with pride. I didn’t feel like I was the ugly, fat girl in the background—I was just one of the girls. And even though they never saw me as any different, it made a huge difference for me. Each day I get up and go into my closet and I’m actually excited to decide between all the cute outfits I have because they don’t have to hide any rolls or an unflattering figure. I've even worn bikinis to the beach and pool with friends. It’s all so much fun! After six months of not doing so, I even posted a picture of myself on Facebook because I’m no longer embarrassed, and I finally recognize the girl in the picture (and I’m happy to say it’s me!)

Her graduate “program

I gradually lost some more weight while finishing my undergrad work, and I've stayed between 135 and 142 pounds after I reached my goal weight. When I graduated from UNCW, it felt great wearing a dress that I never dreamed I'd fit into (from my favorite designer/brand!) to my graduation ceremony. I'm now planning to attend the University of Richmond school of law to pursue my JD, and I know I’ll also feel more confident starting there in the fall, since I’m now at the weight I feel most comfortable at.

Today I'm prepping for school and still living on my own, so I still find it's easier and preferable to eat Nutrisystem food just because I honestly think the food tastes as good as any other meal. I just incorporate more calories in to maintain my weight. Sometimes, though, I go out to eat with friends or want to try some new recipe and it's been no big deal to just add some regular meals in here and there. It hasn’t ruined my weight loss success!

Because of Nutrisystem, I feel better, I look better and I feel a lot better about myself in all that I do. Most important, my health is better. I can run a mile without being out of breath, and I can worry a lot less that I won’t live to see my children grow older (or maybe that I won’t even not be able to have children at all).

Day by day, Nutrisystem gave me the greatest gift of all: my life back.
