Tony’s Tale
Alabamian reflects on his journey one year later
Almost exactly one year ago, on September 23, 2012, this 54-year-old male began the process of age reversal by using Nutrisystem. Now, 46 pounds lighter* and in the best physical shape since my late 20’s, I am rewarded each day by some flattering comment from family or friends. Truly feeling years younger, I am smiling frequently and looking forward to each day.

Here’s how it all happened.

A sporting chance

I competed, amateurishly speaking, in various sports over my first 25 years: baseball, bodybuilding and karate, to name a few. As I transitioned into the responsibilities of providing for a family, I also progressed into less physically demanding sports like softball and an occasional round of golf (riding in a cart, no less). Nonetheless, I have always been competitive, as evidenced by the wear and tear on my body that led to total hip and shoulder replacements within the last 5 years or so.

After celebrating the birth of my first grandson in August 2012, I began to reflect on the days when my own two sons were young, as I anxiously awaited their physical maturity so that I could play ball with them. Now I was experiencing the anticipation of being active with my beautiful grandson.

However, I realized it had been some time since I participated in anything physical that would be considered “real” exercise. So I excavated my shorts and tennis shoes from the dark corners of the closet to do a short run, knowing that in a matter of a few weeks, I would be fully capable of running 10K races. Even a marathon or completing a triathlon was surely within my reach in a few months.

Not to anyone’s surprise but my own, the legs did not respond. I felt like a toddler trying to take his first steps. The run quickly turned into a slow walk and I wondered how this could be. I then gazed into the mirror and saw every ounce of 225 pounds bulging off my 5’11” frame. “This is unacceptable!” I proclaimed to my wife Vicki. “Something has to be done.”

Choosing for losing

First, as with any good plan, I needed to determine the start date. Knowing that the “big feast” holidays were right around the corner, I asked myself: Should I procrastinate until 1/1/13 and make it a New Year’s Resolution? After all, no one wants to diet during the holidays—unless you would rather only lose 45 pounds instead of 65. With the answer to that question quickly resolved, I felt that September 23 seemed like the perfect date to start since it is was my lucky baseball jersey number (before MJ was famous). Also, it fell on a Sunday. I have an issue starting anything new on a Monday—there are enough inherent challenges pertaining to that day of the week, particularly if it is raining.

Second, the diet plan to adhere to…this time. So many choices: low-carb, low-fat, low-cal. And it seems that each different method has at least 5 different names tagged to the front end. To complicate my dietary decision, I like to eat when I get hungry. So, in order to fill the gap between my impending hunger and my Vicki’s cooking schedule, you can imagine the bad food decisions that were made. I cannot boil a good egg and since our schedules are usually conflicting, waiting on her to prepare something nutritional was not an everyday option.

Message received: Call Nutrisystem!

Then a fading memory cell fired off: Vicki and I had recently run into an old college friend at a football game in Dallas. “You look fantastic! What have you been doing?” we exclaimed. “Nutrisystem,” was the response. “It is so easy and accommodating for people with hectic schedules, you should try it.” Well, she was looking at me with the “You should try it” comment, so confirmation was delivered. Indeed, I looked as bad as I felt.

So Nutrisystem got the nod to help transcend me back to health and vigor. It provided me with a plan that was easy to follow, with a wide variety of meals and snacks to choose from, as well as the added flexibility to incorporate my personal selection of SmartCarbs and PowerFuels. It worked perfectly for my extremely busy lifestyle.

Six months later, thanks to the ease of the Nutrisystem® program and its encouragement to follow a regular exercise routine, I dropped 46 pounds* and feel great. I am down from squeezing into size 36 pants, comfortably wearing 32s and even have one snug pair of 31 inch “teen” jeans (just to show off every now and then).

I continue to use the Nutrisystem® foods to balance out my other meals during the week and am keeping my weight at goal. When speaking of diet foods, I think that’s quite a testimony for how well I enjoy the taste of Nutrisystem foods! Having just passed my one-year “anniversary” of starting Nutrisystem, I am still keeping at my desired weight.

A success story’s stories

I could talk from now to next week and not be able to tell all of the stories of how my life has changed since my weight loss.

First, my energy is endless—I feel like I’m at college level again. Here’s an example of what I mean. Our grandson Parker is now almost 14 months old and since we are blessed to have him living in the same city, I get to enjoy his company several times a week. We went on a 4-mile walk together this past week and I was pushing him in his stroller “popping wheelies,” enjoying that sweet laugh as we toured the neighborhood. That would not have been possible one year ago; I would have been fortunate to make it one block.

Plus, work, as with every other phase of my life, is just so much easier because I am happy and confident with my physical appearance. Vicki is also happy that I will actually go out in public more with her since my transformation, all because I feel more confident.

But here’s the kicker. In June, I had a complete physical done for the first time in 5 years. Why wait so long at my age? Because I did not want to face what I knew the doctor would tell me and what he may find wrong. Well, everything was good, including those dreaded cholesterol levels. My doctor was amazed at the physical shape I was in. He even later commented that I had inspired him to lose weight!

Jaw-dropping weight loss benefits

Fast-forward a month. On July 22nd, I had hip replacement surgery. Three days later, I walked a total of 1.2 miles without any assistance—no crutches, not even a cane! I went for my first physical rehab assignment on July 26th, walked in without crutches and the first question I received was “How many weeks ago did you have your surgery?” My response: “Uh, 4 days ago.” I thought the guy’s jaw was going to hit the floor. I had a total of three rehab appointments in six days and then they released me. That same guy who’d originally asked about when I had my surgery had this to say on my last visit: “There isn’t anything else we can do for you. You probably didn’t need to come at all.”

“Unprecedented” was how my doctor described it. He wants me to be his poster child for hip replacement candidates.
And that’s my real reward for sharing my Nutrisystem story—the hope that it may encourage at least one other individual with similar needs to commit to becoming as healthy and full of energy as I am today. I believe that losing weight with Nutrisystem certainly helped with my hip replacement recovery, and it can similarly help others live healthier and live better in ways they could never imagine. So even though people usually associate hip replacements with “old” people, I prefer to be an inspiration for anyone to lose their excess weight and get in shape—and to reap the benefits that will follow.

That’s what I’m still doing one year later. As a result, I can say with certainty that Nutrisystem is, by far, the best weight loss program that I have experienced. I’m a true believer!
