Marvelous Marsha!
Selfless mom finally puts herself first, loses 92 lbs.*
I’ve always been someone who’s looked out for everyone else first. For years, I was a married stay-at-home mom raising two boys, taking care of my parents and running my own business. I‘d had problems with my weight starting with my first pregnancy at age 21; my weight climbed higher and higher every year until, at age 43, I was at my highest at 238 pounds.

I was miserable, unhappy and unhealthy. I had no energy, my joints hurt, I was always tired, I was on blood pressure medicines and I felt just empty inside. Sure, I could put on a happy face but deep inside I hated myself and my appearance. I steered clear of events, people and family because of my weight. I had trouble riding in an airplane, going on amusement rides, and sitting in the seats of a local baseball game. I was very anxious and self-conscious about the people around me, and worried about crowding them. Crossing my legs like a lady? I couldn’t do that since I was 20 years old. It was embarrassing. I realized that, by helping others I had truly let myself go. I was missing out on the fun of each and every day and letting life pass me by.

I was ready to just give up when my oldest son, Nathan, broke the news that he had decided to get married. That announcement was my wake-up call; I didn't want to have pictures taken at the wedding looking the way I did. With one son getting married and the other graduating from high school, I thought it was time to do something for me. It was time to finally lose weight.

Wedding planning

I had 12 months before the wedding to do this, and I so wanted to achieve it. Through the years, I had tried every diet out there. Sometimes I’d lose some weight, but I’d always gained it back, plus more. I needed something else. One Sunday I found an article in the paper advertising Nutrisystem. The next Sunday there it was again. This time I got online and did some research. I was skeptical, figuring it was just another fad diet. That same evening I sat down on the couch to eat a bowl of potato chips and there was a Nutrisystem commercial on TV with Marie Osmond. It was like someone was giving me my answer. That’s when I got really excited and ordered the program. I couldn't wait to get started.

When my first box of food came to my door, I sat it down on my living room floor, got down on my knees and prayed for the strength to see this through and succeed. I never had willpower. I never had the commitment. I never had the dedication, and I never had the energy to follow through. The key, as it turns out, was the attitude that Nutrisystem fostered in me. For example, I lost weight right away, but in the second week, not so much. During some other weeks I would lose less than a pound. On other previous diets, this is when I would have thrown in the towel. Not this time. Nutrisystem was easy, fit into my busy schedule, and taught me portion control, what to eat, the importance of exercise, and so much more. And it worked—I met my goal weight two months before the wedding, and had a wonderful time on my son’s big day!

All smiles…finally

I love Nutrisystem and what it has done for me. It saved me from the person that I had become. Remember when I said I always put on a happy face? Well, my family was at a wedding and one of my son’s schoolmates commented to him about how much weight I lost and that I smiled all the time. My son replied that that his mom smiles constantly now—but when we were growing up, she never smiled much. And that made me sad because I always thought I’d hid my misery. But at the same time, it’s true: my transformation includes smiling all the time. I can’t help myself (and people seem to notice)!

That’s because I am truly a new person. More accurately, I am still Marsha, but I am the Marsha that was hiding under all that excess weight, sheltering myself from the world. I found the true me. I have tons of energy, love exercise, love going places and being with people, am more outgoing, and have so much more self-esteem. Most of all, I love me. I truly could not say that before this. I hated myself and the example I was. I thought it was who I had to be. I thought I had no other choice. Nutrisystem showed me that I did have a choice—a choice to be healthy.

That’s why when I see someone who’s overweight, I so want to help. I will tell my husband Greg (who has been so supportive on this journey), “I know how that person feels.” It’s a terrible thing to be like that and not know what to do to change it. A prisoner in a body where life is so small and miserable. A place where you shelter yourself from the world. So I would (and do) recommend Nutrisystem to anyone. It is an amazing program and anyone that is struggling with weight issues needs to try it. It is worth every penny it costs.

The two Hs

I have always said that the two most important things in life are health and happiness. I can truly say I have both now. To celebrate, I decided to actually do a whole transformation by changing the style and color of my hair, which I hadn’t altered since I was 14 years old. The change was so drastic, my dog barked at me, thinking I was a stranger, and my cat hissed at me! Plus, some people don't even recognize the new me—even people I do business with. It’s a little weird, but honestly it is so cool! Sometimes someone will say they thought my husband was with another woman and we just laugh. My youngest son Tyler introduces me to friends as his new Mom, and Nathan and his new wife Cala tell people that I'm in my second childhood.

Thanks to Nutrisystem, I changed so much more than the number on the scales. The entire journey was a soul-searching period. I found myself. I found how to enjoy life, how to feel good about myself, how to make time for me, that I am important, and that, in order to give to others, I have to take care of myself first. It has been the best investment I’ve ever made in me. It’s been the greatest journey I have been on, and I am so grateful. This program has been such a blessing and it’s given me back my life.
